International students can now work up to 25 hours a week

More hours, more flexibility — but the new limit doesn't apply to everyone automatically.

Student working part-time in hospitality

International students in New Zealand can now work more during their studies. Since 3 November 2025, eligible student visa holders are allowed up to 25 hours of part-time work a week during term — up from the previous 20-hour limit.

Who the new limit covers

The higher allowance applies to student visas approved on or after 3 November 2025, even if the application was submitted earlier. It now reaches a broader group of students than before:

  • Tertiary students in eligible courses
  • Eligible secondary school students
  • Study Abroad students, including those enrolled for a single semester

Already have a visa? You may need to act

If your student visa was granted before 3 November 2025, you'll generally remain on the 20-hour limit. To access the extra five hours, you would need to apply for a variation of conditions, or a new student visa — and standard immigration fees apply. It's worth checking your visa conditions carefully before increasing your hours, as working beyond your limit can put your visa at risk.

What this means for you

The extra hours can help cover living costs and build valuable local experience — but studies must still come first. If you're unsure whether the 25-hour limit applies to your current visa, we can check your conditions and arrange a variation if it's worthwhile.
