If you're planning an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), English language is now part of the picture for many more roles. From 1 June 2026, Immigration New Zealand extended its mandatory English requirement to skill level 3 occupations — not just the level 4 and 5 roles it mainly applied to before.
What's changed
- Mandatory English now also applies to skill level 3 occupations under the AEWV.
- Some workers who already hold an AEWV and whose visa expires on or before 1 December 2026 may be exempt when applying to complete the rest of their permitted stay.
- Separately, New Zealand is moving from the older ANZSCO system to a new National Occupation List (NOL), with dozens of new occupations recognised for the AEWV.
Why it matters
English evidence is one of the most common reasons applications are delayed or sent back for more information. Knowing in advance whether your role now needs an approved English test — and booking it early — can make the difference between a smooth approval and a frustrating hold-up. At the same time, the move to the National Occupation List opens the door to a wider range of skilled workers than before.
